WHAT IS THIS AWARD
Established in 1993, the Million Dollar Advocates Forum was created by a California trial lawyer to serve two essential purposes. First, to recognize the skills, experience and accomplishments of trial lawyers who had won large and complex cases. Second, to provide a national network of experienced colleagues who handle such cases, to facilitate information exchange, local assistance and case referrals. The organization was created and membership invitations were sent to a number of trial lawyers throughout the country who had won million and multi-million dollar cases. Membership invitations are now sent only to attorneys who objectively appear to be qualified, including those whose names have been proposed from case reports and nominations of current members.

The Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association (WPTLA) was incorporated in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on June 19, 1992, however the organization has a long and proud history. The purpose for which the WPTLA and its western Pennsylvania predecessors were organized was to promote, improve and advance the common interest of all members in the causes of trial advocacy, trial by jury and in encouraging fellowship and understanding between the members of the bar and the members of the judiciary. WPTLA strives to be a voice for injured victims and to uphold and defend their rights under the American legal system, including trial by jury.

The Academy of Trial Lawyers, representative of both plaintiffs and defendants in diverse fields of practice, pursues serious and sustained discourse among its members and judges to promote intellectual, ethical and personal understanding and accomplishment. The Academy embodies its principles in the qualities, diversity and expectations of its members; their commitment to justice, the rights of individuals and the common good; and their sustained professionalism, intellectual openness and willingness to be a constructive force in the judicial process. The Academy fosters development, improvement and accomplishment of the highest quality of advocacy before our Courts. Members are dedicated to social justice, innovation in response to changes in our trial practice, the responsibilities of freedom and the importance of trial by jury.

The Membership Committee of the Academy of Trial Lawyers is charged with the responsibility of identifying the best trial lawyers for membership in the Academy from among the applicant pool. The Committee reviews the applications and assesses the skill, professional standards and ethics of every applicant.

The entire Academy membership is confidentially surveyed regarding the qualifications of each applicant. The results of the survey, together with information gained through the application, letters of recommendation, personal interviews and the candidate’s trial experience, are carefully reviewed and considered by the Committee as part of its confidential process of selecting for membership those civil trial lawyers who have exhibited excellence and the highest levels of ethical standards and professionalism.

Upon approval by the Board of Governors, the full Academy membership must vote to approve the new members. Induction into membership takes place each year at the Annual Masters of Trial Advocacy Retreat in the Fall.
